For the first time in 50 years, a new cement plant will open in Arizona. After nearly 10 years of planning and construction the $300 million Dark Cement Plant, located at the site of the old rail siding of Drake, approximately 10 miles north of Paulden, will host its grand opening today.
The plant, which employs the latest environmental and energy technology, is capable of producing 660,000 tons of portland cement a year.
At its peak, nearly 600 workers were employed constructing the facility. Once up and operating at capacity it will employ approximately 100 workers.
Drake Cement also has a sister company, Drake Materials, a redimix company that had previously purchased the assets of Maricopa Redi Mix and Sunshine Redi Mix a ready mix concrete supplier. Both companies are headquartered in Scottsdale.
Both companies are subsidiaries of Cementos Lima, the largest cement company in Peru.
The last cement plant built in Arizona was the Phoenix Cement Plant in Clarkdale, built in 1959.
