SYRIA: 3 Million Tons Cement Plant Launched in Syria

Aleppo - Owned and carried out by Lafarge, a leading French company specialized in building and construction materials, in partnership with Syrian MAS Economic Group, the cement plant built in Kharab Ishq village in Aleppo countryside, started production with a capacity of 3 million tons of cement per year, reports Global Arab Network according to Syrian sources. 

Chairman and CEO of Lafarge, Bruno Lafont said the plant will help achieve self-sufficiency in cement to cover the local market needs and provide about 1000 job opportunities for local people in the area, pointing out that the money invested in the plant reached USD 680 million (1 USD is equivalent to about 47 SYP).



He added that the plant will prove very beneficial for local building sector through providing high-quality products as it was equipped with the up-to-date machinery and is on a par with the international environmental standards and security and safety criteria. 

Lafont said that the plant indicates Lafarge's confidence in the Syrian government and in the Syrian market which is quickly growing. 

French Ambassador in Damascus Eric Chevallier voiced happiness over establishing Syrian-French joint projects, which signals the deep evolving relations between the two countries in various fields, particularly in economy.

The construction works of the plant started in 2007. 

Lafarge has become one of the pioneering companies worldwide specializing in the fields of cement, construction aggregates, concrete and gypsum wallboard. It has factories in 78 countries and includes 78, 000 employees. Last year, its sales reached up to Euro 15, 9 billion (1 Euro is equivalent to about 65 SYP). 

MAS Economic Group is one of the top-ranking investment groups in Syria in the industrial and development fields.
