PLANS are on by the Ebonyi State Government to establish three regional rice processing plants as well as a market at Afikpo North Local Government Area.
The market will serve Afikpo, the second largest town after Abakaliki, the state capital and the headquarters of Ebonyi South Senatorial District.
The three rice processing plants would be sited at Osso Edda in Afikpo South, Onueke in Ezza South and Ikwo council areas.
Governor Martin Elechi, who disclosed this during his campaign rally at Afikpo North and Afikpo South local government areas, said that the proposed regional market in Afikpo North lcouncil, for which land had already been acquired, would complement the international market currently under construction at Abakaliki at the cost of about N13 billion with the capacity of 5,355 stalls.
Elechi solicited the votes of the people of Afikpo North and Afikpo South council areas to enable him return to office for second term, stressing that such opportunity would help him complete some of the ongoing projects in the zone and in the state in general, as well as to execute more for the economic development of the state.
The governor promised to tackle youth unemployment with the establishment of a cement factory during his second term, adding that a site had been located while the coring and other geo-physical survey had already commenced.
He said that when completed, the proposed cement factory would employ 20,000 youths of the state, while a new agricultural policy he had put in place would take care of the remaining unemployed youths.
Elechi said that 247 indigenes of Afikpo North council benefited from the state micro credit scheme, making the council the third largest beneficiary after Ivo and Izzi which came first and second.
The governor appealed to the people of the area to remain peaceful at all times as no development can take place in an atmosphere of violence.
He urged the people to vote all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates from President Goodluck Jonathan to all the House of Assembly candidates.
In their remarks, stakeholders in the area as well as various candidates of the party including Sunday Ogbu Oji for Senate, Christopher Omo-Isu for Afipko North/South federal constituency, and all the House of Assembly candidates, expressed gratitude to Elechi for appointing their sons and daughters into various state and federal positions, including the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, the new Head of Service of the state, Mrs Ugo Nnachi, the state Chairman of the party, Chief Ugoji Ama Oti, as well as commissioners and chairmen of boards and parastatals.
The people of the area also assured Elechi and Jonathan of their votes, saying that they had benefited a lot from his administration in the area of roads and bridges.
