INDIA: Frayed tempers on cement prices

Himachal Pradesh is home to half a dozen mega cement plants, but consumers in the state continue to pay high prices for cement, higher than even neighbouring Punjab. The issue caught the state’s BJP government on the wrong foot in the Assembly on Monday.

The government also faced accusations of extending undue concessions and favours to the cement companies — “only to allow them to sell cement at exorbitant rates to Himachalis”. Congress MLAs led by PCC president Kaul Singh Thakur, Mukesh Agnihotri and joined by senior BJP member Roop Singh Thakur, suggested that directions should be issued to the cement manufacturers in Himachal to control their prices. Agnihotri said: “You have recently regularised the land in favour of Jaypyee-which has also sponsored T-20 cricket series in Himachal Pradesh but why is the government helpless in regulating the rates of cement in the state? We are also providing them with water, electricity and allowing destruction of the environment .
