EEUU: Hudson Valley cement plant closing in June

cATSKILL, N.Y. — A Hudson Valley cement plant will be closing in June, putting dozens of people out of work.

The Register-Star of Hudson reports that Holcim Inc. President and Chief Executive Bernard Terver announced Tuesday that the company will close its factory in Catskill because of the poor economy and market conditions.

Terver says the company will mothball the plant after its last day of operation, expected to be in mid-June.

The company took over operations at the plant from St. Lawrence Cement in 2008.

Holcim temporarily laid off more than 60 employees last fall, about half the work force. The layoffs were extended in January and February. Workers were also laid off in 2009.

Holcim is the American subsidiary of Swiss-based Holcim Ltd., one of the world's leading cement manufacturers and suppliers of crushed stone, sand and gravel.
