Mexican cement giant Cemex says it pared its losses to $276 million in the first quarter of 2011 compared to a $342 million loss in the same time period last year.
Cemex says in a statement that sales increased to $3.4 billion between January and March, up 11 percent over the first quarter of 2010.
The Cemex statement released Friday said sales were up in Mexico, Europe and Central and South America, with Europe leading the performance with a 24 percent jump to $1.2 billion.
The U.S. sales fell 8 percent, to $507 million, compared to the same time period last year.
Cemex, one of the largest cement producers in the world, has operations in 50 countries.
